In the foreground, ore boat downbound in the MacArthur Lock. In the backgrounhd, ore boat upbound in the Davis Lock. There are four locks on the American side of the roaring St. Mary's Rapids, and one on the Canadian side. The American canals are known as : the MacArthur; the Poe; the Davis and the Sabin. The MacArthur lock was constructed during World War II and was named for General Douglas Mac Arthur. The Poe, Davis, and Sabin Locks were named for engineers who were instrumental in their construction

Home of Uncle Sam

TROY, N. Y., HOME OF UNCLE SAM

The familiar sobriquet "Uncle Sam" was first used at Troy, N. Y., in the year 1812. Government supplies branded "U.S." were officially inspected by Samuel Wilson whose nickname was "Uncle Sam". The coincidence of initials suggested the jocular use of "Uncle Sam" to mean the United States. The nickname was picked up by newspapers and quickly caught the popular fancy. F. Bellows' cartoon of "Uncle Sam" personifying the United States appeared March 13, 1852. Later, cartoonist Thomas Nast added whiskers and stars to the caricature of "Uncle Sam".

BADWATER, the bottom of America, is 280 ft. below sea level, and several points nearby are reportedly 2 ft. lower. Badwater temperatures have probably soared beyond the official U. S. high of 134° F recorded at a higher point in Death Valley. Despite high summer-time temperatures, BADWATER and other Death Valley points have mild and comfortably warm winter weather.

Since 1852 Toledo has been the seat of government of Lucas County, named for Robert Lucas, militant Ohio governor who waged the "war" with Michigan. The courthouse is located among other government buildings in the civic center. The statue is of President William McKinley.

THE MACKINAC BRIDGE

In Michigan -- The Water Wonderland

An early morning view from the bridge maintenance area. That's the Mackinac Bridge bus on the roadway at left. It maintains schedules between St. Ignace and Mackinac City. A lake freighter passes serenly (sic) eastward under the center span with scarcely a ripple. The green cable coming directly toward the camera doesn't look very big, but it is 24-1/2" in diameter and contains 12,580 wires.
