One of the largest freighters of the Pittsburgh Steamship Division is the Arthur M. Anderson. Its length is 620 ft. and its capacity is 19,500 ton. Here it is loading ore at the Two Harbors Docks which are the fastest loading docks in the world. Verage loading time is 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The BIG THREE of the Arnold Line fleet of 10 steel ships. They are the largest and safest ships providing passenger service to Mackinac Island from St. Ignace and Mackinae City, Michigan. The French Ship Rocroi enters the Duluth-Superior thru the famous Aerial Lift Bridge. Also shown is the Streamliner an Excursion Boat. A tug helps guide the 13,000 bulk cargo carrier Rocroi, which is 555' feet long with a 69' beam and a 27' draft.

Hello from the Mackinac Bridge

THE MACKINAC BRIDGE

In Michigan -- The Water Wonderland

An early morning view from the bridge maintenance area. That's the Mackinac Bridge bus on the roadway at left. It maintains schedules between St. Ignace and Mackinac City. A lake freighter passes serenly (sic) eastward under the center span with scarcely a ripple. The green cable coming directly toward the camera doesn't look very big, but it is 24-1/2" in diameter and contains 12,580 wires.

NEPTUNE — SYMBOLIC RULER OF THE SEA

This statue was given Duluth by the State Fair Board and the land loaned by the Corps of Engineers at Canal Park, Duluth, Minn. to commemorate the arrival of the first deep draft ocean going vessel into Duluth on May 3, 1959. Neptune was God of the Sea — son of Cronus and Rhea. The Greeks called him Poseidon. He was Jupiter's brother. Neptune controlled all the waters of the earth and was worshiped by sailors. The 3 prong spear he carried was called Trident.
