This colorful formation seen along Artist's Drive is known as the Palette. Death Valley's variety of features and vividness of color is fabulous, the flamboyant coloring and unique beauty is in a setting that was millions of years in the making.

Information on the marker:

Various mineral pigments have colored these volcanic deposits. Iron salts produce the reds, pinks and yellows. Decomposing mica causes the green. Manganese supplies the purple. Colors on the "palette" are reproduced in a larger scale on the mountains around Death Valley.

Mount Sinyella

Balanced Rock and Steamboat Rock

The roadway from the western entrance of the Garden of the Gods separates famed Rocks, which attract countless visitors. Balanced Rock stands firmly on a seemingly pinpoint base. The "Deck" of the Steamboat Rock affords an excellent viewpoint.
