Mail Boat

J.W. WESTCOTT II — MAIL BOAT
Detroit River, Michigan 48222
The only boat in the world with an exclusive Zip Code Number.  (J.W. Westcott is postmaster of the Great Lakes.) The year 1969 begins the 75th year of direct ship-to-ship mail deliveries. Operates 24 hours-a-day from mid-April to mid-December. The Westcott II takes mail from the postal station on First Street in Detroit and meets Great Lakes freighters and keeps pace with the moving freighter while a crewman lowers a maibucket down over the side and into the cabin of the mailboat, and in seconds hauls it up again. Then the Westcott is on its way to shore.
